What is Moko Jumbie?

Moko Jumbies are traditional Caribbean stilt-walking masquerade performers whose origins are rooted in West African cultural traditions. Towering above the crowd in colourful costumes, Moko Jumbies have long been associated with spiritual protection, resilience and cultural identity.

Today, they remain an important part of Caribbean Carnival, connecting generations through movement, storytelling, artistry and performance.

About the Program

Our Moko Jumbie program goes beyond learning to walk on stilts. Through hands-on workshops led by experienced cultural practitioners, participants will explore the history, cultural significance and artistry of this unique Carnival tradition.

Participants will have opportunities to:

  • Learn about the African roots and cultural significance of Moko Jumbie.
  • Receive introductory stilt-walking instruction and learn essential safety techniques.
  • Explore Carnival costume-making and creative expression.
  • Build confidence, coordination and teamwork through guided activities.
  • Connect with Caribbean heritage and cultural traditions.

The program is designed to create opportunities for young people, particularly those of African and Caribbean descent, to see their heritage represented, develop new skills and connect with cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

Our long-term goal is to develop a community of trained Moko Jumbie performers who can help carry this tradition forward through future workshops, cultural celebrations and events such as i-Land Fest.
