Carnival Arts

Our Mas Making program creates opportunities for community members to experience the art, history and traditions behind Caribbean Carnival.

Each year, Caribbean Hub works to secure funding so we can offer accessible Mas Making workshops to the community. Participants learn hands-on techniques used to create Carnival costumes and pieces while also exploring the history and cultural significance behind the art form.

Our workshops go beyond simply making a costume. We explore the history of Carnival and masquerade, the traditions of Mas, the meaning of taking to the streets, and themes of freedom, resistance, celebration and cultural expression.

Participants then bring that learning to life by creating their own Mas pieces alongside members and cultural practitioners from our community.

Whenever possible, the pieces created through our workshops become part of our i-Land Fest Parade, giving participants the opportunity to move from learning and creating to actually experiencing Mas on the road.

Through continued funding and community support, our goal is to keep passing on the knowledge and skills of Carnival arts, create opportunities for new generations to learn the traditions, and ensure these important cultural practices continue to be celebrated and shared.
